ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired an emergency National Security Committee (NSC) meeting today following India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty and escalate diplomatic tensions. Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated Pakistan would deliver a “comprehensive response” to India’s actions, likening it to the 2019 retaliation after the Abhinandan incident.
India’s measures, announced after a cabinet meeting led by PM Narendra Modi, include closing the Attari border checkpoint, canceling SAARC visas for Pakistanis, and ordering Pakistani nationals in India to depart within 48 hours. New Delhi also declared Pakistani defense officials in India “undesirable” and recalled its defense attaché from Islamabad, while reducing its High Commission staff in Pakistan.
The NSC, attended by top civil-military leaders, reviewed India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and discussed countermeasures. Asif emphasized the treaty’s multilateral significance, condemning India’s move as a “false flag” pretext. Pakistan has vowed to challenge the decision internationally.
