Pakistan to send first astronaut to space

Pakistan is poised to send its first astronaut into space following a landmark collaboration agreement between the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).

As part of the agreement, two Pakistani astronauts will receive training at China’s Astronaut Center, with one ultimately being chosen as a scientific payload specialist for an upcoming mission to Tiangong, China’s space station.

The selection process is anticipated to be finalized by 2026.

During their mission aboard the Chinese Space Station (CSS), the Pakistani astronaut will carry out experiments in fields such as medical sciences, aerospace technology, physics, space radiation, ecology, and astronomy.

These studies aim to advance space technology and foster scientific breakthroughs with potential applications for improving life on Earth.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the agreement as a historic achievement for Pakistan’s space program, calling it a pivotal step in the nation’s pursuit of human spaceflight.

He highlighted Pakistan’s consistent advancements in space science and technology, pointing to successes in satellite launches and contributions to international scientific endeavors.

Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Planning & Development, emphasized that the partnership would accelerate technological innovation and enhance Pakistan’s capabilities in human spaceflight.

He noted that the collaboration with China extends beyond astronaut training, setting the stage for Pakistan’s long-term goals in space exploration.

Dr. Lin Xiqiang, Director General of CMSA, welcomed Pakistan’s involvement, highlighting the growing space cooperation between the two nations.

SUPARCO Chairman Mohammad Yousuf Khan described the initiative as a transformative milestone and urged professionals and researchers to actively contribute to the program.

In a separate announcement, SUPARCO has predicted that Ramadan in Pakistan will commence on Sunday, March 2, based on its lunar observations.

This agreement marks a significant leap forward for Pakistan in its quest for human spaceflight, opening a new chapter in its space exploration journey.
