UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has urged the UN Security Council to take immediate action to stop Israel’s “aggression” against Iran and to hold it accountable for its actions, following Israeli air strikes on Iranian targets, APP reported Saturday.
Addressing the Council during an emergency session, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, strongly condemned the attacks, accusing Israel of acting with “impunity” and violating international law. “This Council must not allow Israel to continue operating freely in defiance of global legal norms and public opinion,” he said.
Citing Article 51 of the UN Charter, Ambassador Ahmad affirmed Iran’s right to self-defence, while highlighting that Israel’s repeated military actions in Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen demonstrate a pattern of “unilateral militarism.”
Council members broadly agreed that diplomacy and de-escalation are essential to prevent further instability in a region already overwhelmed by multiple crises.
The session was requested by Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who warned that Israel had “crossed every red line” and called on the global community to ensure accountability. Pakistan, along with China and Russia, supported Iran’s request for the emergency meeting.
UN Urges Restraint and Dialogue
UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo told the Council that the consequences of the Israeli strikes were already being felt. She reiterated the UN Secretary-General’s condemnation of all military escalations in the Middle East and urged both sides to exercise maximum restraint to avoid a broader regional conflict.
DiCarlo also pointed out that the strikes occurred just as important diplomatic progress was being made, including planned US-Iran talks in Oman—talks that Iran now appears unwilling to attend. She stressed the importance of staying committed to diplomacy.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar reiterated that the attacks undermine peace efforts. “These strikes, occurring amid diplomatic negotiations to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue, are morally indefensible and violate international norms,” he said. He warned that such actions erode trust in the negotiation process and risk destabilizing the broader region.
Pakistan reaffirmed its support for a peaceful, diplomatic resolution to the Iran nuclear issue, emphasizing that dialogue must remain the top priority.
