Pakistan’s electricity production hits five-year low

Electricity Prices Set to Drop for Ninth Month in a Row

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s electricity production hit a five-year low despite government support and a winter relief package.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) reported that electricity generation fell to 6.495 billion units in February 2025. This was down from 7.137 billion units in February 2024 and 7.756 billion units in February 2023.

In February 2022, production stood at 8.087 billion units, while in February 2021, it was 7.281 billion units. February 2020 saw over 7 billion units generated.

CPPA data also showed a drop in electricity distribution. In February 2024, distribution companies received 6.876 billion units, compared to 7.516 billion in February 2023.

In February 2022, companies received 7.774 billion units, while in February 2021, they got 6.996 billion. The number stood at 6.756 billion in February 2020.

Media reports citing sources linked the decline to reduced economic activity, which lowered industrial electricity demand. Rising solar adoption due to high power costs also contributed to the drop in consumption.

In November 2024, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched the Bijli Sahulat Package. The plan offered up to Rs 26 per unit relief on electricity bills for December, January, and February.
