LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has postponed the remaining eight matches of the 10th edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) in light of the rising hostilities between India and Pakistan.
This decision follows a significant escalation in the security situation over the past 24 hours, marked by intensified ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LOC), the reported incursion of 78 Indian drones, and the firing of surface-to-surface missiles from India.
Just a day earlier, the PCB had announced plans to shift the remaining PSL fixtures to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to growing concerns of a possible conflict. However, the evolving circumstances have led to a complete postponement of the matches.
Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also suspended the Indian Premier League (IPL) for one week. A BCCI official told the Press Trust of India, “It does not look appropriate for cricket to continue while the nation is on the brink of war.”
According to a statement from the PCB, the decision to halt PSL proceedings was made after consultation with Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif. The Prime Minister emphasised the need to focus national attention on the steadfast response of Pakistan’s Armed Forces to Indian aggression, which has reached a dangerous level.
“The PCB and its players stand firmly with the families of our martyrs and the brave personnel of our security forces who are defending the nation with unmatched resolve,” the statement read.
The board also expressed gratitude to its franchises, players, broadcasters, sponsors, and organising partners for their unwavering support and commitment throughout the tournament. However, it acknowledged that while cricket unites and uplifts, it must respectfully pause in times of national crisis.
“We also deeply value the mental well-being of our players and understand the concerns of foreign players and their families who are anxious for their safe return home,” the statement added.
