PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert regarding the increased risk of glacial brust in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to heavy and continuous rainfall.
Residents of Chitral Upper and Lower, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan Upper have been advised to stay vigilant as glacial lakes may burst, leading to flash floods. The PDMA has instructed district administrations to monitor sensitive areas, conduct evacuation drills, and issue timely warnings to at-risk communities.
Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary movement near rivers and streams and warned against driving vehicles into fast-flowing water. Emergency evacuation sites have been prepared, and rescue teams have been put on high alert.
Tourists visiting the region have also been advised to take precautionary measures. Additionally, the National Highway Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organization (FWO), and Communication & Works (C&W) Department have been directed to remain prepared for road restoration in case of damage.
The PDMA’s Emergency Operation Center is fully operational, and the public can contact the helpline 1700 for assistance or to report emergencies. An awareness campaign is also underway to educate people on safety measures.
