PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of an increased risk of glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the province’s mountainous regions. The alert has been issued for Chitral Upper and Lower, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan, where melting glaciers pose a potential threat.
Authorities have directed district administrations to monitor sensitive areas closely, conduct timely evacuation drills, and keep the public informed about possible dangers. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement near rivers and streams and refrain from driving vehicles into fast-flowing water.
Emergency preparations are underway, with evacuation sites ready in high-risk zones. Rescue teams and emergency equipment have been put on high alert to respond swiftly if needed. Tourists visiting these areas have also been urged to stay cautious and follow safety guidelines.
The PDMA emphasized the need for preventive measures as climate change accelerates glacier melt, raising the risk of sudden floods in vulnerable regions.
