Peshawar court sentences narcotics offender to life imprisonment

A local court in Peshawar on Tuesday sentenced a narcotics offender to life imprisonment who was charged in the Hashish smuggling case.

The hearing was presided over by Additional District and Sessions Judge Inamullah Khan. The court sentenced the accused, Faheem Ali Punjab, to life imprisonment for drug smuggling. In addition, the court imposed a fine of five hundred thousand rupees on him.

The prosecution presented evidence stating that the accused was taken into custody near the Motorway Gol Chowk, where 21,600 grams of hashish were recovered from his possession. A case was registered against him at the Excise Police Station following the recovery.

After an FIR was filed, the prosecution proceeded with the case against the accused. During the trial, Faheem Ali was found guilty, resulting in the imposed sentence.

The Rickshaw Drivers Association protested against the decision of the Town Muncipal Administration Charsadda for bringing a double increase in the Parking tax, demanding immediate withdrawal of the decision.

Protesters gathered at Farooq Azam Chowk, blocking the road for all kinds of traffic and raising slogans of “No, No, No Tax.” The drivers expressed frustration over the doubling of their daily tax from Rs 50 to Rs 100, calling it unjust and oppressive. The first day of Pakistan’s new fiscal year hadn’t even reached its peak when the first public protest broke out — this time in Charsadda district, where Qingqi rickshaw drivers took to the streets against a recent tax hike.
