Severe financial crisis at Peshawar University threatens academic operations

Peshawar University facing worse financial crisis

PESHAWAR: Teachers and other staff of Peshawar University are not receiving their salaries for the last several months as both the Federal and Provincial governments failed to grant funds to this historic institute, which is already facing severe pressure due to lower enrollments and brain drain of postgraduate students to international universities.

Once deemed as the most popular and historic university of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, this university is now facing multiple challenges owing to a large number of employees with a lack of funds to be rewarded with salaries. This historic University of Peshawar is facing a severe financial crisis, where teaching and non-teaching staff are protesting for the third consecutive day against non-payment of salaries.

The protesting teachers and other employees, organised by the Joint Action Committee, have staged a sit-in in front of the administration block. The protesters say that if their demands are not accepted, a complete lockdown will be imposed from tomorrow, and all teaching and administrative departments of the university will be closed.

The protesting employees say that salaries have not been paid for the last two months, which is a clear denial of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s claims of an educational emergency. According to the employees, the learning process would remain suspended until their demands were approved, but exams and other administrative activities would also remain completely closed.

This is not a single university which is facing faced financial crisis, but other universities in the province are also facing the same shortage of funds, which is a question mark over the performance of both the Federal and provincial governments. The federal government have stopped releasing full releases of NFC share and funds of federal divisible pools, which led to a financial crunch in various departments.
