Peshawar’s BRT makes history with first female bus driver

Peshawar BRT Hires First Female Drivers in Historic Move

PESHAWAR:In a historic step toward gender equality, Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system has welcomed its first female driver, 37-year-old Ruth Maryam, who now navigates buses on the city’s busiest routes.

Maryam, who recently completed rigorous professional training, told an interview: “No profession is beyond women’s reach if pursued with passion and hard work.” The trailblazing driver described her role as an honor and hopes her achievement will inspire more women to join Pakistan’s transport sector.

Officials hailed the move as proof of the government’s commitment to inclusive employment. With Maryam now safely transporting hundreds of daily commuters, her presence challenges deep-rooted social norms in the conservative region.
