PESHAWAR: On the directives of Peshawar High Court (PHC) Chief Justice, District Sessions Judges conducted visits to 34 jails across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), leading to the release of 214 prisoners involved in minor crimes.
The judicial officers reviewed cases of inmates charged with petty offenses and issued immediate release orders. According to the Registrar of the PHC Office, the highest number of releases—69 prisoners—came from Central Jail Peshawar. Other major releases included 25 inmates from Swabi Jail, 16 from Mardan, nine from Kohat, 10 from Haripur, and 11 from Dera Ismail Khan Jail.
This move follows the President’s earlier announcement of Eid-ul-Fitr clemency, under which hundreds of prisoners have already been freed from jails across the province. The initiative aims to decongest prisons and provide relief to individuals detained for minor violations.

Legal experts have praised the judiciary’s proactive approach, emphasizing that such measures help uphold justice while easing the burden on the penal system. Authorities confirmed that all released prisoners had completed the majority of their sentences or were held in minor, non-violent cases.
