PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court give three months deadlines to NHA to complete work on Indus and Hazara Motorway.
The court said in the verdict that the poor condition of the Hazara Motorway has become a nuisance for travellers, while the chaotic traffic and violations on the Indus Highway have put the lives of not only travellers but also locals at risk.
According to the verdict, NHA officials told the court that the Indus Highway project was started in 2018 but could not be completed yet due to lack of funds. According to officials, Rs7 billion was required, but only Rs1.5 billion was provided, which proved to be insufficient. The court expressed concern that 217 dangerous accidents took place on the Indus Highway in just one year, in which several people died and several were injured. This situation requires immediate attention and serious measures.
The judgment said that the backwardness of infrastructure in the southern districts is the result of unfair distribution of funds, which not only hinders development but also gives rise to problems like unrest. The court has directed to complete the ongoing work on the Indus Highway within three months, and has ordered the concerned authorities to ensure the safety of passengers and provision of basic facilities at all costs.
The commissioners of Kohat, DI Khan and the concerned divisions have been directed to fully cooperate with the relevant institutions so that the project can be completed on time. The court has also given a three-month deadline for the Hazara Motorway, sought a report from the relevant parties and directed that a thorough investigation be conducted into the reasons for the delay in the project.
