PM appreciates Iran’s efforts to de-escalate tensions with India

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a warm and cordial telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday evening, focusing on regional peace, Pakistan-India tensions, and strengthening bilateral ties.

Prime Minister Sharif lauded Iran’s diplomatic efforts during the recent regional crisis, including President Pezeshkian’s earlier outreach and the visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to South Asia. He also conveyed his respects to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and thanked Tehran for its supportive stance.

Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned India’s recent unprovoked military aggression, which resulted in the loss of civilian lives, including women and children. He noted that Pakistan’s armed forces responded with restraint yet firm resolve. Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to peace, he stressed the country’s adherence to the ceasefire agreement with India.

The Prime Minister also expressed deep concern over India’s unilateral move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it illegal and a red line for Pakistan, given its crucial importance to over 240 million people.

Highlighting the Jammu and Kashmir dispute as the core issue driving instability in South Asia, he emphasized the need for its resolution in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

President Pezeshkian extended condolences for the civilian casualties and praised Pakistan’s efforts to de-escalate tensions. He reiterated Iran’s commitment to regional peace and stability.

The two leaders agreed to deepen collaboration in trade, connectivity, security, and people-to-people exchanges. President Pezeshkian also invited Prime Minister Sharif to visit Tehran—an invitation the Prime Minister graciously accepted.
