Prime Minister PM Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting on tax reforms, directing authorities to bring all eligible individuals and sectors into the tax net while taking strict action against tax evaders and officials facilitating them. He emphasized that broadening the tax base remains a top priority to eventually reduce tax burdens on the public.
The PM praised his economic team for progress toward FBR’s fiscal targets and instructed officials to complete digital monitoring of the cement sector and other industries by next month. He also called for stronger coordination with provincial governments to enhance tobacco sector tax collection and expedite pending tax recovery cases.
Officials reported that the Track and Trace System’s full implementation in cement plants has already generated billions in additional revenue, while sugar industry tax collection rose 35% from November 2024 to April 2025. Ongoing FBR reforms aim to increase tax revenue to 10.6% of GDP.
