PM Shehbaz, UN secretary-general discuss regional security in phone call

Prime Minister Muhammad (PM) Shehbaz Sharif received a phone call from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss the ongoing security situation in South Asia, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

This marked the second phone conversation between the two leaders within a week, as reported by the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

During the call, Prime Minister Shehbaz welcomed the Secretary-General’s continued engagement and outreach, particularly his call for de-escalation and avoidance of confrontation in the region. He reiterated Pakistan’s offer for an independent, transparent, and credible investigation into recent incidents and voiced concern over India’s lack of cooperation in providing evidence, while continuing to issue provocative statements and threats.

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity and expressed deep concern over India’s attempts to politicise international financial institutions to undermine Pakistan’s economic interests.

Secretary-General Guterres briefed the prime minister on his ongoing diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability in the region and assured his continued engagement with all relevant stakeholders.
