PM terms sports a key pillar to development on Int’l Day of Sports

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said the government has made sports a central pillar of its development agenda, recognising its power to drive national growth, empower youth, and project Pakistan’s identity globally.

In his message marking the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, the Prime Minister emphasised that the country’s national sports policy prioritizes grassroots participation, talent identification, gender equality, and inclusivity.

He noted that initiatives like the Arshad Nadeem High Performance Academy are helping nurture young athletes by offering scientific training, financial support, and access to modern facilities.

Observed globally on April 6, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace recognises the vital role sports play in promoting social inclusion, peacebuilding, and development—particularly in regions affected by conflict, poverty, or inequality.

This year’s theme, “leveling the playing field: sport for social inclusion,” highlights the importance of equal access to sports and highlights how sports can unite communities, encourage healthy lifestyles, and foster solidarity and team spirit.
