GILGIT: Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif arrived in Gilgit-Baltistan today on a one-day visit, where he will review the areas affected by the recent rains and floods, meet the victims and announce relief activities.
The Prime Minister was received at the Gilgit Airport by Governor Gilgit-Baltistan Syed Mehdi Shah, Chief Minister Gulbar Khan, Chief Secretary, IG Police and Force Commander.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by important members of the federal cabinet, including Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Minister for Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs Engineer Amir Muqam, Minister for Climate Change Dr. Mosaddiq Malik, Advisor on Interior Rana Sanaullah and Prime Minister’s Coordinator Shabbir Usmani.
During the visit, the Prime Minister will be given a detailed briefing on the loss of life and property due to the recent heavy rains and floods in Gilgit-Baltistan. Shahbaz Sharif will meet the affected families, and a relief package is expected to be announced.
Gilgit-Baltistan government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq termed the Prime Minister’s visit as a good omen, saying, “The worst flood disaster has caused more than Rs 20 billion in damage to Gilgit-Baltistan. The cooperation of the federal government is like oxygen for us, and the eyes of the victims are on the Prime Minister. The residents of dilapidated houses and mud-covered settlements are waiting for a cure for their wounds.”
According to sources, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif may also announce a special rehabilitation package for the affected areas which aimed at restoring the affected infrastructure of the local population.
