Peshawar Police have used tear gas to disperse the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) protesters, protesting against alleged corruption in the province. The clash intensified after PPP supporters stormed the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf camp outside the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly in Peshawar on Monday.
The Pakistan Peoples Party is protesting against alleged corruption in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the “Save the Province Movement”, in which party workers from different districts are participating.
The police have completely blocked the entrance and exit routes of the red zone, while a large number of PPP workers are present at the Assembly Chowk and are shouting strong slogans against the government.
The protesters tried to enter the red zone, where the police fired tear gas at the protesters, which made the situation tense.
According to the traffic police, due to the closure of Khyber Road, traffic has been diverted to alternative routes so that the citizens face minimal inconvenience. The angry PPP protesters set fire to the camp set up for the Imran Khan release movement in Peshawar.
SSP Operation Masood Bangash, while talking to the media, said that the protest was peaceful, but a few masked people tried to enter the red zone, so they shot tear gas to stop them.
He said that no worker has been arrested so far.
“PTI goons set fire to our peaceful protest, police baton charged, shelled and hooliganized. This corrupt government cannot demoralise us with such tactics. This movement will gain more strength,” PPP MPA Ehsanullah Miankhel said.
