PESHAWAR: Pakistan People Party (PPP) Secretary General for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mohammad Humayun Khan, has strongly condemned the arrest of the party’s Dera Ismail Khan District President, Malik Farhan Afzal Dhap, calling it a blatant act of political victimisation and misuse of state power by the provincial government.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Humayun Khan said, “The arrest of our district president is nothing short of political revenge. This is state-sponsored bullying by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, aimed at silencing dissent and suppressing democratic voices.”
He demanded the immediate release of Farhan Dhap, terming the action unlawful and unconstitutional. “Farhan Dhap has been arrested not for any legal reason, but because of his association with the PPP and his vocal stance against the government’s injustices. This is a clear misuse of authority, and we demand his immediate and unconditional release,” he said.
Humayun Khan further stated that the provincial government is attempting to suppress PPP leadership through coercion and intimidation. “They are trying to crush our leadership with force, but this strategy will backfire. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government must realise that political opposition cannot be silenced with high-handed tactics,” he asserted.
He warned that such repressive actions against opposition parties are not only undemocratic but also unconstitutional. “Peaceful political activity and public protest are basic democratic rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Any effort to curb these rights is a violation of both law and democratic norms,” said the PPP leader.
Humayun Khan also criticized the overall political environment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, claiming that the provincial government is deliberately creating obstacles for PPP workers and leaders. “Our party workers and leadership are being cornered across the province. The government is making life difficult for them, but we will not be silenced,” he vowed.
He concluded by reiterating the party’s commitment to democratic struggle and peaceful resistance, saying, “PPP has always stood for democracy and the rights of the people. No amount of pressure or arrest will deter us from continuing our fight for justice and constitutional rule.”
