QUETTA: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Quetta on Saturday for a one-day visit to participate in a high-level jirga focused on addressing the worsening law and order situation in Balochistan.
Upon his arrival at Quetta Airport, the premier was warmly received by Acting Governor Abdul Khaliq Achakzai, Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, and other senior provincial officials.
The jirga, convened in the provincial capital, gathers tribal elders, political leaders, provincial ministers, and lawmakers from across Balochistan. The assembly aims to discuss the escalating security challenges and identify measures to improve coordination among various stakeholders to restore peace in the region. According to official sources, PM Shehbaz will engage closely with tribal elders and local leaders to discuss internal security and development issues, seeking their cooperation to promote stability in the province. This forum is part of a broader initiative by both federal and provincial governments to involve local communities more actively in decision-making processes. Later in the day, the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the victims of the recent Sorab blast, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. During his visit, he is expected to check on the condition of the injured and reassure them of the government’s full support. Balochistan has seen a surge in violence in recent months, with frequent attacks targeting security forces and civilians, raising concerns about the province’s security environment. The federal government has reiterated its commitment to eradicating terrorism and restoring peace in Balochistan through collaborative efforts with the provincial administration and local communities.
