ISLAMABAD: PTI leader and former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser on Sunday announced the launch of a lawyers’ movement against the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, calling it a direct threat to democracy and provincial autonomy.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai and former Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair, Qaiser said PTI would also consult legal experts on the 26th Amendment, which the party had previously opposed. He recalled that PTI had staged a walkout during its passage, reaffirming the party’s strong opposition.
“The current system is neither legal nor constitutional,” he stated, criticising the disqualification of PTI lawmakers and accusing the government of turning the National Assembly into a “drama” controlled from behind the scenes. He condemned the alleged public humiliation of parliamentarians outside Adiala Jail and the denial of prison inspection rights, terming it unlawful and undemocratic.
Qaiser also issued a public apology over PTI’s decision to grant an extension to former army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, calling it the party’s “biggest mistake.” He pledged never to support such a decision again.
Meanwhile, Achakzai warned that altering the Constitution would destabilise the country, saying, “Tampering with the Constitution threatens the very foundation of Pakistan.”
Zubair criticised the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) for failing to deliver despite being in power for over three years, adding that the public is ready to speak out against the prevailing system.
