BAJAUR: In light of the continued displacement of the local population due to the tense situation in Tehsil Mamond, Bajaur tribal district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Bajaur has requested the provincial government to establish temporary relief camps in Khar Bajaur for 2,000 displaced families.
Local sources report that over 1,000 families have already fled their homes due to an ongoing targeted security operation against militants and the deteriorating law and order situation in Tehsil Mamond.
On Monday, the DC Bajaur sent a formal letter to the Secretary of the Relief and Rehabilitation Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, noting that the security forces’ operation has triggered mass displacement. Families are reportedly relocating to safer areas within the district.
The letter states that around 18,500 families reside in various villages of Tehsil Mamond. While most displaced families have sought refuge with host communities, the DC anticipates growing demand for the establishment of relief camps.
In the letter, the DC requested that a temporary relief camp be set up for 2,000 families in Khar to accommodate those fleeing Tehsil Mamond.
According to volunteers from the Qaim-ul-Khidmat Foundation assisting the displaced, the migration has been ongoing for the past five days. Over 500 families have registered at their relief camp so far, while many unregistered families have also relocated.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Bajaur National Jirga has held two rounds of negotiations with militants in an effort to restore peace. However, the talks have not produced any positive outcome. The jirga had urged the militants to vacate the area and return to Afghanistan — a demand the militants rejected.
