A government employee in India’s Maharashtra state fell victim to a sophisticated cyber scam, losing nearly Rs 2 lakh after receiving a wedding invitation on WhatsApp.
The victim received a message from an unknown number inviting him to a wedding. The message contained a link that appeared to be a PDF file but was actually a malicious Android application (APK) designed to hack his phone.
As soon as he clicked the link, cybercriminals gained access to his personal data and banking information. They subsequently withdrew Rs 1,90,000 from his account.
The victim has since filed a police report against an unknown individual. This incident has prompted cyber police to issue a fresh warning, urging the public to never download or click on files received from unknown or suspicious sources.
