LOWER CHITRAL: Like other parts of Malakand Division, traders in Lower Chitral observed a complete shutter-down strike on Wednesday, voicing strong opposition to the federal government’s recent decision to impose taxes in the region.
Markets, shops, and business centres remained closed throughout the day as part of the protest. The strike was called by local trader associations, who argue that the region — already economically underdeveloped and affected by lack of infrastructure — cannot bear the burden of additional taxation.
Speaking to the media, representatives of the business community said that the government’s move to introduce federal taxes in tax-exempt areas like Malakand is both unjust and harmful. They emphasized that Malakand Division, including Lower Chitral, has historically been exempt from federal taxes due to its special status and challenging geography.
“The government must reconsider its decision,” said one trader. “We are already dealing with inflation, poor road conditions, and limited business opportunities. New taxes will only add to our struggles.”
Protesters carried banners and placards demanding the immediate withdrawal of the tax notification. Peaceful rallies were also held in various parts of the district, with community leaders, shopkeepers, and civil society members participating.
Local political figures and social activists have also voiced support for the traders’ demands, urging the central government to respect previous agreements and recognize the unique circumstances of the region.
The strike in Lower Chitral is part of a broader movement across Malakand Division, where similar protests have taken place in districts such as Swat, Dir, Buner, and Shangla. Trader associations have warned that if the decision is not reversed, the protests could expand into a long-term campaign, including sit-ins and road blockades.
So far, the federal government has not issued an official response to the strike or the growing demands from Malakand Division residents.
