Sri Lanka’s former president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, was taken into custody on Friday following allegations that he misused state funds during his time in office. A court has ordered him to remain in jail until at least August 26.
Wickremesinghe, who is 76 years old, served as president during the country’s severe economic collapse. He lost the 2024 election and now faces accusations related to a trip he took to the United Kingdom. Local news outlets reported that the visit was for a special graduation event where his wife received an honorary professorship.
A police spokesperson confirmed the arrest, stating that Wickremesinghe is being investigated for the alleged misuse of public money.
A member of his political party, the United National Party (UNP), defended the former leader, calling the case politically motivated. The supporter highlighted that Wickremesinghe had taken charge during the nation’s economic crisis and helped steer the country toward recovery.
The government has not yet issued an official comment on the matter.
