ISLAMABAD: The surge in sugar prices continues for the fifteenth consecutive week, reaching a record Rs180 per kg in major cities. Consumers face increasing financial pressure, especially during Ramazan.
The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported a rise of Rs14.22 per kg. The highest prices are in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and Karachi. In Quetta, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore, and Peshawar, sugar prices range between Rs175 and Rs176 per kg.
Despite the sharp increase, sources confirm that Pakistan’s sugar reserves are sufficient until October 2025. By February, sugar mills had crushed 56 million tons of sugarcane, producing 5.3 million tons of sugar.
The government has exported 741,000 metric tons of sugar. Meanwhile, sugar mills currently hold reserves between 400,000 and 500,000 tons.
Inflation continues to rise, with the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) increasing by 0.22% for the week ending March 13, according to PBS data.
