Sugar prices jump Rs 8 per kg at utility stores across Pakistan

Sugar prices hit record high deaspite surplus stock

ISLAMABAD: The price of sugar at utility stores has increased to Rs 158 per kilogram, up from Rs 150 per kg last week, according to the latest data released by the Bureau of Statistics. Despite the hike, sugar at utility stores remains Rs 10.68 cheaper than the average open market price.

The government has maintained strict oversight on sugar prices, with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar recently chairing a high-level meeting to review compliance with price control measures. According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, Dar emphasized the need for sugar mill owners to adhere to the agreed-upon rate of Rs 164 per kg or lower, as per prior negotiations.

Meanwhile, the Traders Association has called on the government to withdraw its fixed price order of Rs 164 per kg, arguing that market dynamics should dictate pricing. The association claims that artificial price caps disrupt supply chains and create shortages.

Authorities, however, remain firm on enforcing the agreed rates to ensure affordability for consumers amid rising inflation.
