Taliban frees US citizen held in Afghanistan for two years

American detained by Taliban in Afghanistan is freed in deal mediated by Qatar

A US citizen tourist, George Glezmann, abducted in Afghanistan in December 2022, was released by the Taliban in a deal brokered by Donald Trump’s envoy Adam Boehler and Qatari negotiators.

Glezmann, an airline mechanic from Atlanta, is the third American freed by the Taliban since January.

His release, part of the Taliban’s efforts to normalize US-Afghan ties, did not involve a prisoner exchange, unlike previous deals.

The Biden administration had considered trading Guantánamo detainee Muhammad Rahim for Glezmann but insisted on the release of Afghan-American businessman Mahmood Habibi, whom the Taliban denies holding.
