SWABI: Pakistan is facing a worsening water crisis, with water levels in the country’s largest dam Tarbela reached its dead level, raising serious concerns for agriculture and power generation.
A spokesperson for WAPDA confirmed that the water level in Tarbela Dam has reached a dead level while Mangla Dam is also close to a dead level. The Tarbela Dam’s minimum operating level is 1402 feet.
According to a spokesperson for WAPDA, the current water storage level has dropped to 1402.09 feet, inches close its dead level of 1402 feet.
He further went on to say that the usable water storage in Tarbela Dam has run out.
Due to the shortage, 16 out of 17 power generation units at Tarbela Dam have been shut down.
A spokesperson for WAPDA says that the minimum operating level of Mangla Dam is 1050 feet, and the current water level in Mangla Dam is 1054.00 feet.
According to a spokesperson for WAPDA, the usable storage in Mangla Dam has decreased to only 0.077 million acre-feet.
The water storage in Chashma Barrage has also decreased to a very low level. The minimum operating level of Chashma Barrage is 638.15 feet.
The spokesperson says that the current water level in Chashma Lake is 638.70 feet, leaving usable storage in Chashma at only 0.009 million acre-feet.
