Tarbela Dam spillways opened amid rising water level: NDMA

NDMA launches documentary series to create awareness about climate change

ISLAMABAD: Authorities have opened the spillways of Tarbela Dam due to a surge in water levels, according to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

According to NDMA, water discharge could reach up to 250,000 cusecs. Residents near the Indus River have been cautioned to avoid riverbanks due to the heightened flow. All relevant departments have been alerted in advance, while residents of low-lying areas have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with local authorities.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab reported that the Indus River is experiencing low-level flooding at Chashma Barrage. Water levels currently stand at 1,546 feet (96% capacity) at Tarbela Dam and 1,205.25 feet (63% capacity) at Mangla Dam, while flow at other major barrages, including Kalabagh, Taunsa, Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri, remains normal.
