TikTok launches “AI Alive” tool to turn photos into videos

TikTok has introduced a new AI-powered feature called “AI Alive” that transforms still photos into short videos. The tool, available through TikTok’s Story Camera, uses AI to add movement, atmospheric effects, and creative enhancements to images—even for users with no editing experience.

To use the feature, users select a photo and enter a text prompt describing how they want the image animated. TikTok auto-fills the prompt with *”make this photo come alive,”* but users can customize it. Testing showed the tool takes minutes to generate a short video, though it struggled with complex requests, like turning a cat photo into an anime-style clip.

TikTok says the tool includes safety checks: AI moderation reviews photos, prompts, and videos before publishing, and final approval occurs before posting. AI-generated videos will carry a label and C2PA metadata to clarify their origin. The company hopes to avoid past mishaps, like its “sway dance” filter accidentally adding phantom people to videos.
