The Trump administration has revoked Harvard University’s authority to admit international students, according to a report by a foreign news agency. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Thursday that Harvard’s Student and Visitor Exchange Program certification has expired, effectively barring the university from accepting new foreign students and requiring current international students to transfer.
DHS Secretary Christine Noam notified Harvard of the decision in a letter, stating the action was taken due to an ongoing investigation into the university. The move has drawn sharp criticism from Harvard, which called the ban “illegal” and warned it would cause “serious harm” to both the institution and the nation.
The controversial decision comes amid heightened tensions between the Trump administration and several elite universities over immigration policies and foreign student enrollments.
