Trump says US engaged in 'direct talks' with Iran over nuclear weapons

President Donald Trump announced Monday that the United States is engaged in direct talks with Iran over its nuclear program. The surprise statement came during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office.

Trump revealed that discussions would escalate to high-level talks beginning this weekend. “We’re having direct talks with Iran, and they’ve started. It’ll go on Saturday. We have a very big meeting, and we’ll see what can happen,” he said.

He emphasized that reaching a deal would be preferable to other options, hinting at potential consequences if negotiations fail. “The obvious is not something that I want to be involved with, or, frankly, that Israel wants to be involved with if they can avoid it,” Trump added.

The President warned that Iran would face “great danger” if the talks are unsuccessful. “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. That’s all there is,” he stated.

Trump did not disclose the location of the upcoming talks. The announcement follows previous reports of Iran rejecting direct negotiations with the U.S.
