TTP claims attack on Diamer checkpoint in GB

CHILAS: The outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Saturday claimed responsibility for a terrorist attack on a Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) Scouts check post in the Hudur area of Chilas, Diamer.

According to officials, two soldiers of the G-B Scouts were martyred while another sustained injuries when terrorists opened fire on the security post late Thursday night. G-B Home Minister Shams Lone confirmed the incident to HUM News English, stating that the attackers fired from a nearby mountain between 12:05 am and 12:20 am.

In a message issued on its WhatsApp channel, the banned outfit claimed the assault under its so-called “Al-Khandaq Operation,” while inflating the casualty figures beyond the official count. District Police Officer Abdul Hameed verified the TTP’s claim but refrained from sharing further details, citing confidentiality.

Gilgit-Baltistan Inspector General of Police (IGP) Afzal Mehmood Butt visited the site on Saturday, where he was briefed on the attack. He directed law enforcement agencies to accelerate efforts to track down and apprehend the perpetrators. Butt pledged that law and order would be upheld in the region and vowed strict action against those involved in terrorism.

Separately, G-B Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan, along with cabinet members, visited the residence of Naib Subedar Khush Dad in Chaprote, Nagar, to offer condolences to his grieving family. The chief minister offered Surah Fateha and expressed solidarity, stating that the nation is proud of its soldiers who sacrifice their lives defending the motherland.

Calling the attack a “cowardly act” that tarnishes Diamer’s peaceful image, CM Khan said the state would never forgive terrorists. He pledged full support for the martyred officer’s widow and daughter under government policy and announced improvements to electricity supply in Chaprote as part of assistance to the bereaved family.

Speaking to the media, the chief minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to peace, vowing that law enforcement agencies would take decisive measures against terrorist elements. He further noted that the people of Diamer had rejected the attack and were fully backing peace efforts along the Karakoram Highway.
