The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to phase out identity cards by introducing advanced facial recognition technology for residents and citizens. The AI-powered system, part of the country’s digital strategy, will allow individuals to verify their identity through facial scans or fingerprints to access government services, vote, or use smart gates at airports.
Abdul Rahman Al Owais, Minister of Health and Safety, confirmed the initiative, stating the biometric system aims to streamline identification while boosting security. Existing biometric setups at Abu Dhabi and Dubai airports already enable document-free passenger checks. The nationwide rollout could be completed within a year.
