UNITED NATIONS: United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed “deep sorrow” over the tragic loss of lives in Pakistan following the recent flash floods, reaffirming the UN’s readiness to extend support if requested.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with all those affected by the disaster.
“We stand ready to provide assistance should it be requested,” the statement read.
According to official figures, more than 300 people have lost their lives in Pakistan’s northwest after two days of torrential rains and flash floods. The calamity struck remote mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, bringing cloudbursts, lightning, landslides, and flash floods in what is being described as the deadliest spell of this year’s monsoon.
It is worth recalling that in September 2022, Secretary-General Guterres visited Pakistan to witness the devastation caused by catastrophic floods, which had claimed over 1,300 lives and displaced millions, particularly in Sindh and Balochistan provinces.
