UNHCR urges Afghan refugees to vacate Islamabad and Rawalpindi by February 28

UNHCR Urges Afghan Refugees to Vacate Islamabad and Rawalpindi

Islamabad: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has issued updated directives for Afghan refugees residing in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, in line with the Pakistani government’s policies. Afghan refugees have been instructed to vacate the twin cities by February 28, unless they possess a valid visa for Pakistan.

According to the UNHCR, Afghan refugees awaiting resettlement to a third country will be permitted to stay in Islamabad and Rawalpindi until March 28. The agency has urged all refugees to comply with these guidelines to avoid potential legal or administrative challenges.

This development follows reports of the Pakistani government’s phased plan to repatriate Afghan citizens, both legal and illegal. The first phase targets individuals without legal documentation, while the second phase focuses on refugees holding valid documents or refugee status. The third phase involves refugees awaiting asylum in other countries.

The UNHCR has emphasized the importance of adhering to the new instructions to ensure a smooth transition and avoid complications. Further details on the implementation of these measures are expected to be released in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Afghans awaiting resettlement in third countries will be shifted out of Islamabad and Rawalpindi by March 31.
