A U.S. federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to bar Harvard University from admitting foreign students, marking a legal victory for the prestigious institution.
The ruling came after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revoked Harvard’s authority to enroll international students, citing an ongoing investigation and claiming the university’s student exchange program certification had expired. DHS Secretary Christine Noam notified Harvard of the decision, stating that current foreign students would need to transfer.
Harvard strongly opposed the move, calling it “illegal” and warning of “serious harm” to the university and the country. The university swiftly challenged the ban in court, leading to a temporary injunction that prevents the administration from enforcing the restrictions while legal proceedings continue.
The judge ruled that last week’s temporary hold on the policy should remain in place, dealing a setback to the Trump administration’s stricter immigration policies. The case highlights ongoing tensions between U.S. universities and federal authorities over international student regulations.
