The US State Department has issued a strong critique of India’s human rights situation in its annual global report. The report expresses “deep concern” over the Indian government’s actions.
According to the report, serious violations have become common in India. These include killings outside the legal system, arrests without proper cause, and harsh limits on peaceful protests and free speech.
The report details harassment of media outlets critical of the government and the arrest of journalists on questionable charges. It also states that civil society groups face politically motivated legal cases and illegal restrictions on their work.
Regarding Indian-administered Kashmir, the report highlights severe ongoing restrictions on basic freedoms like expression and peaceful assembly, which it says are crushing civil liberties.
The US State Department called on the Indian government to follow international human rights standards and fully protect freedom of expression.
