US influence in Pakistan is deep-rooted: Shamshad Ahmad

ISLAMABAD: Former foreign secretary Shamshad Ahmad has described US involvement in Pakistan as deep-rooted and longstanding.

Speaking on a private news channel’s talk show, he stated that after 9/11, former army chief Pervez Musharraf (late) became the US’s preferred ally.

He credited Nawaz Sharif for Pakistan’s nuclear tests, asserting that even members of Sharif’s own party and General Jahangir opposed them, warning of repercussions.

Ahmad also disclosed that during the Chaklala meeting, both Musharraf and Nawaz Sharif were prepared to surrender, leading to a decision to withdraw forces.

Following the October 12 military coup, he reached out to the Saudi Crown Prince to ensure Nawaz Sharif’s safety, which was subsequently guaranteed.
