KURRAM: The local administration has started collecting weapons in the restive Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as part of the second phase of the Kohat Peace Agreement.
Under the first phase, the authorities demolished 990 illegal bunkers in Lower and Upper Kurram following the Kohat Peace Agreement and deadly clashes in the region.
According to details, 353 bunkers belonging to both parties have been demolished in Lower Kurram, while 637 bunkers have been dismantled in Upper Kurram.
A total of 990 bunkers have been demolished so far, and the operation has concluded successfully, according to the district administration.
The 14-point Kohat Agreement stipulated that bunkers would be demolished and heavy weapons would be collected from the warring groups.
The second phase involves the surrender of heavy weapons to the government. In Lower Kurram, tribal elders from six clans oversaw the handover of a large cache of weapons at the 113 Wing Kurram Militia Headquarters in Sadda.
The weapons were handed over to Wing Commander Colonel Sohail. The cache included mortar shells, machine guns, and other heavy arms, sources said.
Leaders from the Sunni community stated that the process of surrendering weapons to security forces would continue. They also expressed hope that the Turi tribe would soon begin handing over its heavy weapons as well.
The initiative is seen as a key step toward restoring peace and stability in the region.
