In a significant move toward peace, Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to meet directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The announcement was made by the White House, marking a potential breakthrough in the long-running conflict.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the planned meeting is the next phase of a peace process coordinated by President Trump, who recently spoke with Putin by phone. Leavitt added that a follow-up meeting including President Trump could occur if needed after the initial talks.
The U.S. administration, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will now work to arrange the meeting between the two leaders as quickly as possible.
This development comes just a day after President Zelenskyy and several European leaders met with President Trump in Washington. Those leaders expressed strong support for the new peace efforts. The Finnish President noted that more progress has been made in the last two weeks than in the previous three-and-a-half years, a feeling shared by the U.K. Prime Minister.
