The Court in United States have fined Google for $425 million dollar after breaking the privacy law of the users and sharing data with third party such as Uber, Venmo and Instagram.
According to reports, a case was filed in 2020 in which users alleged that Google collected and stored user data without permission through third-party apps such as Uber, Venmo and Instagram, despite users turning off the “Web & App Activity” tracking feature.
Google was found guilty on three claims in the case, but the court remarked that Google did this in bad faith, so no punitive fines were imposed.
The case involved approximately 98 million users and 174 million devices. Users sought compensation of more than $31 billion, but the court settled for $425 million in compensation.
Google called the decision a “misrepresentation of how the product works” and announced it would appeal. France also fined Google 325 million euros through its data regulatory authority. The reason for this is that Google showed Gmail users ads without consent and used cookies during Google account setup.
