British woman, 116, celebrates as world’s oldest person

Ethel Caterham, the world’s oldest person, has celebrated her 116th birthday.

Born on August 21, 1909, in the village of Shipton Bellinger, England, Caterham now resides in a care home in Lightwater, Surrey. She officially became the world’s oldest living person last April following the death of the previous record holder, a Brazilian nun.

Caterham’s life spans an incredible period of history. She is the last known living subject of King Edward VII and has lived through both World Wars. She traveled widely with her late husband, Lieutenant Colonel Norman Caterham, living in India, Hong Kong, and Gibraltar.

To mark the occasion, she received a birthday card from the current British monarch, King Charles III.
