ISLAMABAD:President Asif Ali Zardari announced a reduction in the sentences of prisoners on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, granting relief to hundreds of inmates across major jails in Punjab.
According to details, the sentences of 196 prisoners incarcerated in Central Jail Lahore were reduced under the presidential order. Similarly, in Adiala Jail, a total of 183 inmates benefited from the remission.
Jail authorities confirmed that 105 prisoners from Adiala Jail were released two days ago after their sentences were shortened. The move follows a tradition of granting clemency during festive occasions, offering inmates a chance to reintegrate into society.
Sources within the prison department stated that the sentence reductions were applied to prisoners meeting specific criteria, though further details on eligibility were not immediately disclosed. The gesture has been welcomed by human rights advocates, who have long called for reforms in Pakistan’s prison system.
