ABBOTTABAD: The Galiyat Development Authority (GDA), in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), convened a joint meeting with hotel owners across the Galiyat region to promote sustainable tourism practices and enhance environmental compliance in the hospitality sector.
The meeting was chaired by GDA Director General Mr. Saharukh Ali and EPA Director General Mr. Samiullah. Senior officials from the District Administration Abbottabad, KP Forest Department, KP Police, and other relevant departments were also present.
The session focused on raising awareness among hoteliers regarding key environmental concerns and the adoption of green practices. Discussions centred on four main areas: solid waste management, sewerage system improvement, water conservation, and environmental protection.
Hotel owners were urged to develop proper waste disposal mechanisms, reduce their ecological footprint, and ensure that untreated sewage is not discharged into water bodies. Authorities emphasised the importance of installing wastewater treatment systems and adopting rainwater harvesting techniques.
Mr. Saharukh Ali noted that unchecked tourism without environmental safeguards poses a significant threat to the region’s ecological balance. “Tourism is vital to Galiyat’s economy, but it must be balanced with our duty to protect the natural environment,” he said.
EPA DG Mr. Samiullah warned that non-compliance with environmental regulations would invite strict legal action. “We will ensure enforcement of the law while also working closely with stakeholders to promote eco-friendly tourism,” he stated.
The meeting concluded with the distribution of awareness material and a commitment from all departments to collaborate in maintaining Galiyat as a clean, green, and welcoming destination for visitors year-round.
