PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to purchase new luxury vehicles for the chairmen of the District Development Advisory Committee (DDAC). According to sources, 26 four-by-four vehicles will be purchased under the project at a total cost of Rs 403 million.
According to private TV channel (Dunya News), in the initial phase, these vehicles will be provided to the chairmen of 13 districts of the province, including Buner, Dera Ismail Khan, Kurram, Mansehra and other districts.
Sources say that the reason for this decision is that the vehicles used by many chairmen have completed their service life and have become unusable in many places.
According to the government’s stance, no new vehicles have been purchased for any chairman since 2014, so the purchase of new vehicles is now inevitable.
However, this decision is being criticized by many quarters. Critics say the province is facing severe financial difficulties and a crisis in basic amenities, and the purchase of luxury vehicles gives the impression of exhibition spending rather than public welfare.
Sources said the project is in the approval stages and tenders are likely to be issued soon. It is not clear whether there will be any formal reaction against the project from the opposition or civil society, but observers are calling the issue a test of priorities.
