ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) have been directed to remain vigilant as a fresh spell of monsoon rains is set to begin today and continue until August 21, bringing heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and windstorms across the country.
The new wave of rains comes alongside warnings of severe flooding in Punjab’s rivers due to rising water levels, fueled by heavy monsoon showers and glacial melt in northern areas, particularly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where flash floods recently claimed over 200 lives in a single day.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), widespread rain, wind, and thundershowers — with heavy to very heavy rainfall at scattered places — are expected in Kashmir (Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur) and Gilgit-Baltistan (Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar) from August 17 to 19 with intermittent gaps.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, widespread rain accompanied by wind and thunderstorms — with heavy to very heavy showers at scattered locations — is forecast in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur, Mohmand, Kohat, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Hangu, Karak, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Waziristan, Tank, and Dera Ismail Khan between August 17 and 19.
