ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Senate has withdrawn a controversial bill that sought to ban social media accounts for children aged 14-16. Introduced by Senator Sarmad Ali, the legislation faced immediate backlash from civil society, politicians, and digital rights groups who called it “a conspiracy to imprison minors.”
While some segments of society supported the bill as protection against online crimes, mounting criticism led Senator Ali to formally withdraw the proposal on Monday before any Senate vote.
