KP Chief Secretary Urges DCs to boost performance, public engagement

SWAT: Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shahab Ali Shah paid an unannounced visit to Swat on Friday, where he inspected the site of the recent tragic accident at Mingora Fizagat Bypass.

Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, the Chief Secretary said he was personally saddened by the loss of lives and vowed that those responsible for negligence during rescue operations would face strict disciplinary action.

During his visit, Shahab Ali Shah announced immediate action against elements involved in illegal stone crushing (“crush mafia”) and land grabbing. He also declared an immediate ban on all types of mining activities in the Swat River, citing public safety concerns.

The Chief Secretary further stated that a crackdown would be launched against encroachments near the river, including unauthorized hotels, restaurants, and private residences built dangerously close to the riverbanks.

He confirmed that any administrative officials found guilty of negligence in handling the Swat River tragedy would be held accountable. Issuing a public safety advisory, he urged tourists to avoid entering the middle of the river under the current circumstances to prevent further loss of life.

In support of the victims’ families, the provincial government has announced financial compensation of Rs. 1.5 million per person for tose who lost their lives in the incident.

To determine the causes and administrative failings that led to the tragedy, an official inquiry committee has been formed, which will also consult with local journalists and stakeholders during its investigation.

Chief Secretary Shahab emphasized that the government is committed to introducing effective and comprehensive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future and to ensure the safety of both locals and visitors in the region.
